This review is from: The urban treasure hunter (Paperback)
Unlike the prior reviewer, I’ve actually READ the book! And Michael Chaplan most certainly does NOT give “advice on how to loot archaeological sites” or do ANYTHING illegal. He makes it very clear that whenever possible, the would-be treasure hunter must ask for permission from the property owner, and find out what the laws are in the area they’re searching. Plus he provides very good, detailed information about the types of metal detectors to look for, what features you do and do not need, and other equipment you should get as well.
I do not own a metal detector and came across this book by accident, but thoroughly enjoyed reading it and am putting a metal detector on my wish list this year! It sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to learn about the history of the area in which you live.
And what I really enjoyed most are the many photos included in this book of Michael Chaplan’s own finds – very neat!
So bottom line is, don’t be put off by one bad review – this is a really good book, definitely NOT telling you to do anything illegal, and giving you lots of good advice on how to start this fun and rewarding hobby! Buy it, and enjoy it!

This review is from: The urban treasure hunter (Paperback)
The author gives the reader advice on how to loot sites. This is very, very wrong and could get you a prison term if you are caught.
Archaeology is about preserving the past, but it also about organized destruction. Once you dig up something and take it home, you remove it from its context and turn it into “another pretty object on the mantlepiece” rather than a clue about history. Remember, things that are in the ground belong to all of us; they don’t belong to the highest bidder.
