I had given up on detecting. I tried it again on the beaches while on a recent trip because the digging is easy in sand, plenty of room for error. When your at a park, or anywhere you have permission to dig however, you need to know where the target is so you can dig out and replace a plug as to not damage the lawn. Pinpointing can be difficult. You will find many people with a dusty metal detector in their garage because they gave up. The first hole I pinpointed with the DetectorPro returned a coin. Time spent from turning on the detector to having the penny in my hand with the DetectorPro was 1 minute. Since then I have dug about 60 holes with the pinpointer and so far only 3 of those holes turned up nothing. I have a huge pile of change (filled paper plate and stacked up) a handful of some junk and TWO necklaces from a single hole! I am learning that many of what I thought were empty targets, really were not. Instead, the item was in the grass plug, deeper then I realized, flew out of the hole while digging and the one I noticed the most… the item I was looking for was often right there in plain sight! This thing is great! Now, lets look at a few things to consider:

Pro: Light, senses very deep, good battery life, very accurate detection.
Cons: Can look like a handgun, no vibrate mode (only noise or light), expensive.

Personally, I can live without the vibrate mode, you can set the volume. Batteries are a bit hard to put in, you have to remove the screw, slide back the top and they just don’t sit naturally. Even transistor radios from the 80′s did a better job of battery inserting and removal. I usually keep my shirt over it because of the appearance. Finally, it was expensive. My metal detector can be had for $250 alone. But, I would never go detecting without this.

Very fast delivery by KellyCo after I made the purchase. I had a problem with the unit – the threshold or frequency control was constantly “ON” and the unit was inoperable in this condition. I contacted both KellyCo and DetectorPro about the problem. They were both very helpful and said to return the unit for a new one, which I did. Just as a side note, KellyCo was very responsive to my needs as they sent a pre-paid UPS label to have the unit sent back at no charge to me. DetectorPro was not willing to do this. Within two days of returning the PistolProbe, a new one was delivered. Hats off to KellyCo for their great customer service. I tested the new unit and it works as advertised.

The probe I got with my detector just wasn’t citting it so I shopped around on the web reading reviews and narrowed it down to the Pistol Probe and the Garrett Pro Pointer. Both had good reviews and what sold me on the Pistol Probe was the depth. You can get a few extra inches out of the Garrett with the coin trick but I didn’t want to mess with that. Having used the Pistol Probe for a while, I couldn’t be happier. I locate with the detector, point the probe down, and when it goes off the target is straight down. Now instead of using a garden type digging tool I use an old steak knife, cut a very small plug, and collect my find.

To me the faster you can dig and recover the better. And the less impact you leave on some parks groundkeeper’s pride and joy the more receptive they’ll be to you being there. I gave it a 5 knowing before going in about the low volume and the fact that you have to use a screwdriver to access the battery compartment. A piece of tape over the speaker to keep dirt out is a good idea. Some folks paint them because they can be mistaken for a gun, I used a strip of red duct tape to make a stripe on it.

All in all it’s a great tool, mine came from Kellyco well packaged and on time.

    Phil
